ENETS European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society
The European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) eV was founded in Frankfurt/Main in March 2004 by researchers in the field of neuroendocrine tumors from several European countries as a logical consequence of the former ENET (European Neuroendocrine Tumor Network) activities.
The above photo was taken in FrakfurtMain, Germany, on March 11, 2004, after the founding session of ENETS. Missing founding members in the picture are: R. Arnold, W. de Herder and G. Delle Fave.
ENETS’s overall goal is to exploit the synergistic effects between European centers of excellence. ENETS works with the aim of integrating basic and clinical research, teaching and the establishment of guidelines for the diagnosis and therapy of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors in a pan-European context. The former ENET organization had brought together key centers of excellence, thereby attracting members from all major European countries including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Austria and Denmark. ENETS, however, is open to anyone or any institution or group in the medical profession involved with neuroendocrine tumors. Since its foundation, ENETS has attracted more than 130 members from throughout Europe and other parts of the world, including the USA, Brazil, Mexico and India.
The Society has also expanded into the new EU member states and Russia, all the while forming valuable relationships within the pharmaceutical industry, namely with Novartis in Basel, Switzerland, and Ipsen Biotech in Paris, France. ENETS collaborates with the German Neuroendocrine Tumor Network, the UK NETwork and similar organizations in most EU member countries. Furthermore, ENETS, in continuation of the ENET tradition, has launched a number of international clinical trials and is in the process of establishing a European database for gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.
ENETS has the recognition of endocrine, gastroenterological and surgical societies in the UK, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Sweden and Greece, among other countries. Neuroendocrine tumors present numerous complex clinical problems and thereby signifi cantly contribute to morbidity and health costs in all European countries. Due to their relatively rare occurrence, research and successive evidence-based patient care have so far been extremely diffi cult. ENETS focuses on these issues. ENETS has also formed a liaison with Karger Publishing in Basel, Switzerland, and is now able to announce Neuroendocrinology as the society’s offi cial journal in agreement with Prof. Claude Kordon in Paris, the President of the editorial board. ENETS looks forward to productive cooperation with this highly esteemed journal in the field of neuroendocrinology and to contri-bute from all aspects of neuroendocrine tumor research.
